WEMBLEY – Manchester United finally hail their first championship trophy in the last six years.
In the Carabao Cup or EFL Cup season 2022/23 final on Sunday, Manchester United defeated Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley Stadium, winning their sixth event title in history.
The Red Devils received an opening goal in the 33rd minute, where Luke Shaw’s free kick led to Casemiro’s header with a high jump.
This is the Brazilian defending midfielder’s fifth goal this season, the former Real Madrid superstar proved that he is a core player of the United’s squad with significant contributions.
The Magpies got another hit when Marcus Rashford shooted in a close distance and the ball touched Newcastle’s Sven Botman to reflect into the net.
This second score was counted as an own goal from Botman, but the official then changed it under Rashford, making the English striker named as the Carabao Cup top scorer with six goals.
Both teams attacked with strong firepower in the second half, but solid defence from both teams’ guards and goalkeepers sealed the door and maintained the full time result.
The Beginning of Ten Hag’s Era
Manchester United team manager Erik Ten Hag again showed his outstanding coaching, giving the club a trophy only six months after his joining.
The Dutch who left Ajax to take charge of the Red Devils in August last year, once being doubted for his ability when the English giant lost all the two matches in the opening of the Premier League this season.
Then, he gradually led the team back to the track, they are now not just celebrating the Carabao Cup victory, also having probabilities to win another three titles before May.
United is still competing in the FA Cup, while they had qualified into the UEFA Europa League round of 16 by eliminating Barcelona in the play-off round.
They are having a slight chance to win their fourteenth Premier League championship too, as they are eight points behind Arsenal with 14 matches left.
Perfection of Three Lines
This minor yet significant success of Manchester United, is not just credited to Ten Hag, also his players who constantly performed remarkably this season.
Argentinian Lisandro Martinez and French Raphael Varane formed the tough centre-back duo, left-back Luke Shaw has great experience with skillful long pass assists.
Bruno Fernandes acted as a playmaker with durable physique, Antony started to prove his value as a top class left winger, while Alenjandro Garnacho is a rising star, not to mention Casemiro who is considered the best signing this season.
In the frontline, Rashford who netted a total of 25 goals this season, guaranteed the role to perform a scoring in their opponent’s territory.
However, it is necessary for the Devils to recruit another powerful striker or forward, to share Marcus’ responsibility, especially when they are competing in multiple events.
It is still early to predict whether Ten Hag could rebuild Manchester United’s golden era since the reign forged by Sir Alex Ferguson, but they are more promising than any of the last decade.
