EPL Matchday 29: Newcastle claimed 3rd place from Man United

Newcastle beat Manchester

LONDON – The English Premier League season 2022/23 completed nine games of matchday 29 last Saturday and Sunday, where top four of the table had been changed.

In the focused match yesterday, Newcastle beat Manchester United 2-0 at St. James Park, taking over third place of the EPL table from the visiting team with the same 50 points but better goals difference.

The Magpies performed better than the Red Devils overall, securing their victory by goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson in the second half.

United showed their weaknesses in both attack and defence, especially when they lost their best defending midfielder Casemiro due to suspension.

The home team had also successfully avenged their 0-2 loss to the Red Devils in the Carabao Cup final this February.

Ten Hag Struggles in battle of Top 4

After the game, both Newcastle and Manchester United are one point above Tottenham Hotspur but one game less to play.

The Spurs will surpass them to rise to third position by beating Everton in Goodison Park on Monday night.

The Red Devils were struggling recently, only gaining one point in their last three league matches, including two losses and one draw.

Before yesterday, they were crushed 0-7 by Liverpool and drew 0-0 against Southampton, conceding a total of nine goals while scoring none.

This poor condition gives club manager Erik ten Hag a huge challenge to stay in top four at the end of this season, in order to qualify into the UEFA Champions League next season.

The Dutch’s squad is desperate to recover in the make-up game against Brentford this Wednesday, to avoid dropping out from top four earlier before season end.

Arsenal and Man City big wins

Last Saturday, both Manchester City and Arsenal crushed Liverpool and Leeds United at home with the same result 4-1.

The Cities ferociously avenged the Reds at Etihad Stadium, thanks to scores from Julian Alvarez, Kevin de Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish, showing their powerful attack although they lost Erling Haaland due to injury.

Arsenal, who went into battle after the Blue Moons, maintained their leading advantage at eight points with one more game played, credited to double scores from Gabriel Jesus, and goals from Ben White and Granit Xhaka.

The contest of the EPL championship between The Gunners and City is getting intensive as there are only nine matches left.

Upcoming: Chelsea Vs Liverpool

On Tuesday night, there will be a clash of the giants between Chelsea and Liverpool as the make-up game of matchday 8.

The Blue Lions are being doubted of their condition or latest squad’s arrangement, as the club had just sacked their head coach Graham Potter, and assigned his assistant Bruno Saltor as interim manager.

The London club is in eleventh place after they lost 0-2 to Aston Villa, while Liverpool is in eight with 42 points, still holding a chance to grab a ticket into the European event next season by finishing as top five.

There are another three make-up games of matchday 7 tomorrow too, including Leeds United meet Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth face Brighton and Leicester City against Aston Villa.
