Newcastle return to UEFA Champions League after 20 years

Newcastle return to UEFA Champions League

LONDON – Newcastle United are celebrating as they return to the UEFA Champions League after a long wait of 20 years.

The Magpies drew 0-0 against Leicester City at St.James Park on Monday night in the English Premier League season 2022/23 matchday 37, giving them one precious point to secure top four position at the end of this season.

After the game, the White and Black Squad hold third place with 70 points, four points ahead of Liverpool with one match left, meaning that they can’t be overtaken by the number five team.

However, Newcastle has a risk to give away the third position to Manchester United after the last matchday, as they are one point ahead of the Red Devils with one more game played.

If Man United manage to win the two games remaining, they will surpass the Magpies to finish this season as top three.

Newcastle – Welcome to New Big 6?

Newcastle showed their remarkable improvement this season, evolving to become a new force in the EPL Big Six, by replacing Tottenham Hotspur which are going degenerate.

They were still on the edge of being relegated one and half year back, until when the Saudi Arabian institution took over the club in October 2021.

The Magpies were still in the bottom place when club manager Eddie Howe took his job in November 2021.

After Howe’s ability in reforming the team, including signing of some valuable players such as Kieran Trippier, Alexander Isak, Nick Pope and Bruno Guimaraes, the White and Black Squad escalated their strength to a competitor of the EPL top four nowadays.

Liverpool almost lost UCL ticket

After Newcastle confirmed to hold a spot in the Premier League’s top four this season, there is only one more seat left of the entry of the Champions League season 2023/24.

Manchester United have an extremely high probability to grab the ticket, as they are three points more than Liverpool with two games remaining.

This means the Red Devils need only a draw against either Chelsea or Fulham this month, in which both matches will be held at Old Trafford.

Liverpool can only set their mission to finish this season as fifth place by beating Southampton in the last EPL match.

Everton hold advantage in relegation zone

The situation of the relegation zone in the Premier League table is more intense compared to the top four.

Everton, Leicester City and Leeds United are struggling for the only spot to avoid falling into the EFL Championship next season.

Everton, with 33 points, will stay in the Premier League by defeating Bournemouth this Sunday.

Leicester and Leeds, each with 31 points, will probably one in and one out after this season.

Southampton already relegated ten days before. The Saints are now in bottom place with only 24 points.

The English Premier League season 2022/23 last matchday will be played this Sunday with ten games playing at the same time.
